Year-Round?

Morocco's Climate: Six Countries in One

Morocco's geography creates a remarkable diversity of climates within a relatively small country. The Atlantic coast enjoys mild, maritime weather year-round. The interior cities bake in summer but cool dramatically in winter. The Atlas Mountains receive heavy snowfall. The Sahara Desert has some of the most extreme temperature swings on Earth. The Mediterranean north feels like southern Spain.

This diversity means Morocco is a genuine year-round destination — the question is not whether to visit but where to focus your itinerary for each season. Summer travelers head to the coast and mountains. Winter visitors enjoy mild southern Morocco and the Sahara. Spring and autumn are perfect everywhere.

Climate by Region

Morocco's six climate zones each offer a different travel experience.

Atlantic Coast

Essaouira, Agadir, Casablanca

The Atlantic moderates temperatures year-round. Summers are warm without the extreme heat of inland cities. The trade wind (Alizé) keeps Essaouira cool but windy. Agadir is the warmest coastal city. Fog is common summer mornings.

Climate

Maritime

Summer

22-28°C

Winter

15-20°C

Rainfall

Moderate (Nov-Mar)

Mediterranean Coast

Tangier, Tetouan, Al Hoceima

Similar to southern Spain. Warmer and wetter than the Atlantic coast. Tangier has the mildest climate in Morocco. The Rif Mountains trap moisture, making this the greenest region. Swimming season is June through October.

Climate

Mediterranean

Summer

28-33°C

Winter

12-17°C

Rainfall

Moderate to heavy (Nov-Mar)

Interior Plains

Marrakech, Fes, Meknes

Hot summers and cool winters with large daily temperature swings. Marrakech is protected from Atlantic breezes by the Atlas Mountains, making it hotter than coastal cities at the same latitude. Fes has colder winters due to its elevation and position.

Climate

Semi-arid continental

Summer

35-42°C

Winter

10-20°C

Rainfall

Light (mostly Nov-Mar)

Atlas Mountains

Imlil, Oukaïmeden, Ifrane

Temperature drops approximately 6°C per 1,000m of altitude. The High Atlas receives regular snowfall November through March. Ifrane ("Little Switzerland") is Morocco's coldest town. Summer is the best trekking season with clear skies and wildflower meadows.

Climate

Alpine/Mountain

Summer

20-30°C

Winter

-5 to 10°C

Rainfall

Snow in winter, rain in spring

Sahara Desert

Merzouga, Zagora, M'Hamid

Extreme daily temperature swings: up to 30°C difference between day and night. Summer is dangerously hot. Winter days are pleasant but nights drop to freezing. Spring and autumn offer the ideal balance. Virtually no rainfall — the driest region in Morocco.

Climate

Hot desert

Summer

40-50°C

Winter

15-22°C day

Rainfall

Almost none

Souss-Massa

Agadir, Taroudant, Tiznit

The warmest and driest lowland region. Protected by the Anti-Atlas from Saharan heat and cooled by Atlantic breezes. Year-round sunshine (300+ days). The argan tree zone. Taroudant is warmer than coastal Agadir.

Climate

Semi-arid

Summer

25-35°C

Winter

18-22°C

Rainfall

Very light

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to visit Morocco?
October is widely considered the best — warm days (25-30°C), clear skies, minimal rain, and the Sahara is perfectly accessible. April and May are equally excellent.
How hot does Morocco get in summer?
Inland cities reach 38-45°C in July-August. The Sahara can exceed 50°C. Coastal cities like Essaouira (22-26°C) and Agadir (25-30°C) remain comfortable year-round.
Does it snow in Morocco?
Yes, in the Atlas Mountains from November through March. The ski resort at Oukaimeden operates in winter. Ifrane regularly sees snow. Snow never falls in lowlands or desert.
When is the rainy season?
November through March, concentrated in the north. Rainfall is moderate — Marrakech averages only 30mm/month in winter. The south and Sahara are virtually rain-free year-round.
Is Morocco warm in winter?
Daytime temperatures are mild: Marrakech 18-20°C, Agadir 20-22°C. Nights are cold, especially in the desert (0-5°C) and mountains (below freezing). Bring warm layers.
What is the Sahara weather like?
Extreme swings: summer 40-50°C day, winter 18-22°C day with freezing nights. Best October-November and March-April — warm days, cool but not freezing nights.
