Morocco Water Adventures
Mountain Lakes, Desert Lagoons & Atlantic Coastline
From the turquoise waters of Bin El Ouidane to the flamingo-filled lagoon of Dakhla, Morocco offers paddling experiences as diverse as its landscapes — and most travelers have no idea they exist.
Lakes, lagoons, rivers, and sea — Morocco has paddling for every skill level in landscapes you will not find anywhere else.
Middle Atlas, near Beni Mellal | 3 hours (200 km) from Marrakech
Morocco's most spectacular paddling destination. This vast turquoise reservoir sits at the junction of the Oued El Abid and Oued Ahansal rivers, surrounded by mountains that plunge dramatically into the water. The color of the water — an almost unreal turquoise-green from dissolved minerals — makes every paddle stroke a photograph.
Season
March - June, September - November
Water Temp
15-24 C
Wildlife
Osprey, cormorants, herons, migrating waterfowl
Paddle the main reservoir arm, exploring coves and cliff faces. Swimming stops and picnic on a remote shoreline.
Venture deep into the narrow canyon arms where the reservoir fingers into mountain valleys. Pack lunch, swimming, and photography.
Evening paddle as the mountains glow amber and the water turns mirror-smooth. Perfect for couples.
Western Sahara | Fly to Dakhla (2 hours from Casablanca) from Marrakech
A 40-kilometer-long lagoon where the Sahara Desert meets the Atlantic Ocean. The flat, warm, turquoise water stretches to the horizon, broken only by sandbanks where flamingos wade and pelicans fish. This is world-class sea kayaking in one of the most surreal landscapes on Earth — paddling between sand dunes and open ocean.
Season
October - May (cooler, still warm)
Water Temp
19-24 C year-round
Wildlife
Greater flamingos, white pelicans, osprey, dolphins, occasional monk seals
Paddle to the flamingo colonies on the inner lagoon sandbanks. Get remarkably close to these birds in the kayak-friendly shallow water.
Kayak to a remote sandbank where Sahara dunes touch the lagoon. Beach landing, Sahrawi tea ceremony, and grilled fish lunch.
Cross the lagoon from the peninsula to the mainland, a 6-8 km open-water paddle with stops at oyster farms and fishing villages.
Atlantic Coast | 2.5 hours (175 km) from Marrakech
Sea kayaking off Essaouira's fortified walls offers a unique perspective on this UNESCO-listed city. Paddle past the ramparts that Orson Welles used to film Othello, around the Mogador Islands nature reserve, and through sea caves carved into the rocky coastline. The consistent winds make this an exciting but demanding paddle.
Season
May - October (calmer winds)
Water Temp
17-21 C
Wildlife
Eleonora's falcons, cormorants, dolphins, sea turtles
Paddle along the base of Essaouira's sea walls, through the fishing port, and past the Skala fortress. Views you cannot get from land.
Circumnavigate the Mogador Islands (landing not permitted — nature reserve). Watch for Eleonora's falcons (April-October) and cormorants.
Draa Valley | 4 hours (200 km via Tizi n'Tichka) from Marrakech
A desert lake at the gateway to the Sahara. The El Mansour Eddahbi reservoir, fed by the Draa and Dades rivers, creates a striking contrast of blue water against red desert hills and the distant snow-capped Atlas. The calm, warm water is perfect for beginners, and the desert silence makes this a meditative paddling experience.
Season
October - May (summer is extremely hot)
Water Temp
16-28 C
Wildlife
Flamingos (winter), herons, egrets, ruddy shelducks
Explore the reservoir's red-rock inlets and sandy beaches. Swimming stops in the warm water with Saharan views.
Early morning paddle when the lake is glass-still and the Atlas glows pink. Photography-focused, with hot breakfast on the shore.
Central High Atlas | 5 hours (280 km to put-in) from Marrakech
Morocco's premier whitewater kayaking destination. The Oued Ahansal cuts through limestone gorges in the Central High Atlas, creating continuous Class III rapids with pool-drop Class IV sections. The river runs through a landscape of extraordinary beauty — vertical canyon walls, hanging gardens, and remote Berber villages accessible only on foot or by water.
Season
March - April (snowmelt, highest water)
Water Temp
8-14 C (cold!)
Wildlife
Barbary macaques, golden eagles, dippers, otters (rare)
The full Ahansal descent through remote gorges. Camping on riverside beaches, portaging around cascades, and paddling through slot canyons.
Atlas Foothills | 40 minutes (40 km) from Marrakech
The closest paddling to Marrakech, just 40 minutes south in the Atlas foothills. This long, narrow reservoir offers calm water with stunning Atlas backdrop. Several lakeside restaurants and guesthouses make it easy to combine kayaking with a leisurely lunch. SUP is also popular here.
Season
Year-round (lake level varies)
Water Temp
14-26 C
Wildlife
Coots, moorhens, egrets, occasional flamingos
Relaxed paddle along the shoreline with Atlas views. Combine with lunch at a lakeside restaurant.
Try both stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking on the calm lake. Instruction included for beginners.
Mar - May
Reservoirs at peak level, rivers running, comfortable temperatures. Best overall season for variety.
Best Destinations
Bin El Ouidane (full), Oued Ahansal (high water)
Jun - Aug
Very hot at lower elevations. Paddle early morning only. High-altitude lakes remain comfortable.
Best Destinations
Lalla Takerkoust, Bin El Ouidane (early AM)
Sep - Nov
Water still warm, crowds thin, excellent light. Dakhla season begins. Reservoirs lowering.
Best Destinations
Dakhla lagoon, Essaouira coast
Dec - Feb
Rivers can flood — avoid whitewater. Southern lakes and Dakhla offer warm paddling. Fewer tourists.
Best Destinations
Dakhla (warm), Ouarzazate (mild days)
Whether you dream of kayaking alongside flamingos in Dakhla, paddling a turquoise Atlas reservoir, or tackling whitewater through mountain gorges, we will create your perfect paddling adventure.
