Race Profiles

Detailed guides for Morocco's six most significant running events.

Marathon des Sables

Multi-Stage Ultra MarathonAprilExtreme

Approximately 4,500 EUR

entry fee

Distance

250 km over 6 stages (7 days)

Location

Sahara Desert, Southern Morocco

Terrain

Sand dunes, rocky desert, dried river beds, small mountains

Participants

~1,200 per year

The Marathon des Sables is the most famous foot race on Earth — a 250-kilometre self-supported ultra-marathon across the Sahara Desert. Competitors carry everything they need (food, sleeping bag, medical kit) on their backs and run through temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius. The race covers six stages over seven days, including one overnight stage. First run in 1986, it has become the defining test of endurance running. Registration typically opens 12-18 months before the race and sells out quickly.

Highlights

  • The longest single-day stage is approximately 80 km — run through the night
  • Bivouac camps with open-sided Berber tents under the stars
  • Mandatory survival equipment carried in your pack at all times
  • Medical team of 50+ staff covers the entire course
  • Post-race celebration in Ouarzazate with a communal dinner

Training Note

Requires 12-18 months of dedicated preparation. Most finishers have completed at least two standard marathons and several ultra-distance events before attempting the MdS.

Marrakech International Marathon

Road Marathon + Half Marathon + 10KJanuaryModerate (road race)

300-600 MAD (30-60 USD)

entry fee

Distance

42.195 km / 21.1 km / 10 km

Location

Marrakech

Terrain

Flat tarmac through the city

Participants

~13,000 across all distances

The Marrakech International Marathon is Morocco's largest road race and one of the best winter marathons in the world. The course loops through the new city (Gueliz), past the Koutoubia Mosque, along the Agdal gardens, and through palm-lined avenues with the Atlas Mountains visible on the horizon. The January timing (average 15-18 degrees Celsius at race start) makes it a popular alternative to cold-weather European marathons. The half marathon and 10K attract runners of all abilities.

Highlights

  • Flat, fast course with a good PB potential
  • Start and finish near the Koutoubia Mosque
  • Atlas Mountain backdrop on clear days
  • Strong local crowd support throughout
  • Combine with a Marrakech city break

Training Note

Standard marathon training is sufficient. The course is flat and fast. Morning temperatures are cool (10-15 degrees) but can warm to 22-25 degrees by finish.

Ultra Trail Atlas Toubkal (UTAT)

Trail Ultra MarathonOctoberVery Difficult (105 km), Moderate-Difficult (shorter options)

1,500-2,500 MAD

entry fee

Distance

105 km / 60 km / 26 km options

Location

High Atlas Mountains (Imlil, Toubkal region)

Terrain

Mountain trails, rocky paths, 6,000 m+ total ascent (105 km)

Participants

~500

UTAT is Morocco's premier mountain trail race, circumnavigating North Africa's highest peak, Jebel Toubkal (4,167 m). The 105-kilometre course accumulates over 6,000 metres of vertical ascent through Berber villages, river valleys, and high mountain passes that reach 3,600 metres. The shorter options (60 km and 26 km) make the event accessible to less experienced trail runners. The October timing offers cool mountain temperatures and autumn colours in the valleys.

Highlights

  • Circumnavigation of Jebel Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak
  • Run through traditional Berber villages rarely visited by tourists
  • Night sections with headlamp running through mountain passes
  • Aid stations serving Moroccan tagine, dates, and mint tea
  • Post-race celebration in Imlil with local music and communal feast

Training Note

Mountain trail experience is essential for the 105 km. The 26 km option is suitable for fit hikers and road runners with some trail experience. Altitude acclimatization (2-3 days in Imlil before the race) is recommended.

Sahara Marathon (SAHARAMARATHON)

Road Marathon + Half MarathonFebruaryModerate-Difficult (heat)

~200 EUR (includes camp stay)

entry fee

Distance

42.195 km / 21.1 km / 10 km / 5 km

Location

Tindouf Refugee Camps (Saharan Algeria/Morocco border)

Terrain

Flat desert, packed sand, some tarmac

Participants

~400

The Sahara Marathon is one of the most unusual and moving races in the world. Run through the Sahrawi refugee camps near Tindouf, it combines endurance running with cultural exchange and humanitarian awareness. The course passes through camps housing Sahrawi refugees, with children and families cheering from the roadside. The entry fee includes meals and accommodation in the camps, and the event raises funds for humanitarian projects. It is not a typical race — it is an experience that changes how participants think about running.

Highlights

  • Run through Sahrawi refugee camps with extraordinary community support
  • Stay with host families in the camps before and after the race
  • Humanitarian focus — proceeds support camp schools and medical facilities
  • Cultural exchange events, traditional music, and shared meals
  • One of the most meaningful races a runner can enter

Training Note

Standard marathon fitness plus heat acclimatization. Temperatures can reach 35-40 degrees. The emotional intensity is as demanding as the physical.

Trail du Toubkal

Trail RaceMayDifficult (45 km), Moderate (shorter distances)

500-900 MAD

entry fee

Distance

45 km / 25 km / 15 km

Location

Imlil to Toubkal region, High Atlas

Terrain

Mountain trails, scree, alpine terrain

Participants

~300

The Trail du Toubkal is a spring mountain race that takes runners through the most spectacular scenery in the High Atlas. The 45-kilometre course climbs from Imlil (1,740 m) through walnut groves, across river valleys, and up to the Toubkal refuge (3,207 m) before descending back to the start. The shorter 25 km and 15 km options follow the lower valley trails and are accessible to runners with basic trail experience. May timing provides warm valley temperatures but cool, potentially snowy conditions at altitude.

Highlights

  • Summit approach to the Toubkal refuge at 3,207 m
  • Spring wildflowers in the Atlas valleys
  • Berber village hospitality at aid stations
  • Smaller field creates an intimate racing atmosphere
  • Stunning views throughout with minimal technical difficulty

Training Note

Hill training and some trail running experience required. The 15 km option is achievable for fit road runners. The 45 km requires genuine mountain fitness and altitude comfort.

Casablanca 10K & Half Marathon

Road RaceNovemberEasy-Moderate

150-300 MAD

entry fee

Distance

21.1 km / 10 km

Location

Casablanca Corniche

Terrain

Flat coastal tarmac

Participants

~8,000

The Casablanca road race is Morocco's most accessible major running event. The course follows the Atlantic Corniche from the Hassan II Mosque along the seafront boulevard, passing the Art Deco city centre and the modern Maarif district. The November date provides ideal running temperatures (15-20 degrees). The 10K distance attracts a huge field of first-time racers and casual runners, while the half marathon draws a competitive crowd. It is the perfect race for visitors who want a running experience without the commitment of a full marathon or ultra.

Highlights

  • Start near the Hassan II Mosque — one of the most dramatic race starts in the world
  • Flat, fast coastal course with ocean views throughout
  • Large, enthusiastic crowd support
  • Accessible for beginners (10K distance)
  • November temperatures are ideal for running

Training Note

Standard road running fitness. The 10K is suitable for regular joggers. The half marathon benefits from 8-12 weeks of structured training.

Training Tips for Morocco Races

Heat Acclimatization

Morocco's races often involve higher temperatures than European or North American runners are accustomed to. Begin heat training 2-3 weeks before travel: run in warmer parts of the day, use sauna sessions post-run, and practice drinking at race-pace intervals. Most races start early (6-7 AM) but temperatures rise quickly.

Altitude Preparation

For Atlas Mountain races (UTAT, Trail du Toubkal), arrive 2-3 days early and do light hikes to acclimatize. Above 2,500 m, performance drops 3-5% per 1,000 m for unacclimatized runners. Sleep at altitude if possible. Diamox (acetazolamide) is available from Moroccan pharmacies if needed.

Terrain-Specific Training

Desert races require sand running practice — even 30 minutes per week on a beach makes a significant difference. Trail races need hill reps and technical descending practice. Road races in Morocco are generally flat and fast, requiring standard road training.

Nutrition During Travel

Moroccan food is generally excellent for runners: tagines with slow-cooked proteins, couscous for carb loading, fresh fruit and nuts for snacking. Avoid unfamiliar spicy foods in the 48 hours before race day. Bottled water only — tap water is not recommended for visitors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best marathon in Morocco for first-time visitors?
The Marrakech International Marathon in January is the best all-around choice. It offers a flat, fast course through one of the world's most exciting cities, ideal winter temperatures (15-18 degrees at race start), and the option of a half marathon or 10K for shorter distances. The entry fee is affordable (300-600 MAD), the organization is professional, and you can combine it with a city break in Marrakech.
How hard is the Marathon des Sables?
The Marathon des Sables is one of the hardest endurance events in the world. Competitors carry all their food and gear (8-10 kg pack) across 250 km of Sahara desert in temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius. The dropout rate is typically 10-20%. Most finishers are experienced ultra-runners who train for 12-18 months specifically for the race. It is not recommended for anyone who has not completed at least two marathons and one ultra-distance event.
Can I run a casual 5K or 10K in Morocco?
Yes. The Casablanca 10K in November is the most accessible race for casual runners. Marrakech also has a 10K option as part of the marathon weekend in January. Parkrun has not yet reached Morocco, but informal running groups operate in Marrakech (Marrakech Runners), Casablanca, and Rabat — check social media for meetup times. Most cities have safe running along the corniche or in public gardens.
Is it safe to run in Moroccan cities?
Generally yes, with sensible precautions. The best running routes are along the corniche (coastal boulevard) in Casablanca, Rabat, and Tangier, through the Gueliz new city in Marrakech, and in city parks (Jardin Majorelle area, Menara Gardens). Avoid running in the medinas (too crowded and uneven) and be cautious running after dark in unfamiliar areas. Early morning (6-7 AM) is the most pleasant time for heat and traffic.
What should I eat before a race in Morocco?
Moroccan cuisine is excellent for runners. Couscous with vegetables and chicken the night before a race provides ideal carb loading. Avoid heavy tagines and spicy harira soup within 24 hours of race time. Breakfast: Moroccan bread (khobz) with honey and jam, fresh orange juice, and mint tea (caffeinated). Bring your own race-day gels and bars if you have specific preferences — Western sports nutrition is limited outside Casablanca.
Do I need a visa to run a race in Morocco?
Most nationalities (UK, EU, USA, Canada, Australia, Japan) can enter Morocco visa-free for up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond entry. No special permits are needed for race participation — simply register through the official race website. For the Marathon des Sables, the organizers handle all desert logistics and permits.
How much does it cost to run a race in Morocco including travel?
Budget estimates per person: Marrakech Marathon weekend (flights from Europe, 3 nights hotel, entry fee, food) from 600-1,200 EUR. Marathon des Sables (entry, flights, pre/post accommodation, gear) from 6,000-8,000 EUR. UTAT trail race (entry, flights, 4 nights Imlil lodge, transfers) from 800-1,500 EUR. Morocco's relatively low accommodation and food costs offset travel expenses.
Where can I train for trail running in Morocco before a race?
The Ourika Valley (45 minutes from Marrakech) has excellent trail running with moderate elevation. The Agafay Desert provides terrain similar to MdS conditions. Imlil and the Toubkal region offer genuine mountain trails at altitude — ideal pre-race acclimatization for UTAT or Trail du Toubkal. Several running tour companies offer guided training camps in these areas in the weeks before major races.
