Why Morocco is a World-Class Golf Destination

Morocco has quietly become one of the most compelling golf destinations on the planet. The country offers over 50 courses — more than anywhere else in Africa — designed by the sport's greatest architects: Robert Trent Jones Sr., Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Kyle Phillips, and Cabell Robinson. Many operate under royal patronage, which translates into meticulous conditioning, generous budgets for infrastructure, and a calibre of course management that rivals top European venues.

The climate is another decisive advantage. While Scotland and Ireland close for winter and Spain bakes in summer, Morocco's diverse geography delivers ideal playing conditions almost year-round. The Atlantic coast courses at Agadir and El Jadida benefit from ocean breezes that keep temperatures in the 18-28°C range even in July. Marrakech, the epicentre of Morocco golf, offers stunning winter rounds beneath snow-capped Atlas peaks with afternoon temperatures that golfers from northern Europe would find revelatory in January.

Beyond the fairways lies the second reason to build a trip around Moroccan golf: no other golf destination offers such dramatic cultural contrast. You finish your round, hand back the buggy, and within 20 minutes you are deep in a 900-year-old medina, watching artisans hand-carve cedar in a workshop that has operated for generations. That juxtaposition — precision modern sport against ancient civilisation — is uniquely Moroccan and increasingly what affluent travellers seek.

Marrakech, Morocco — Est. 1933

Water features and strategic bunkering add to the challenge. This is the course most serious golfers target on a Marrakech trip.

When to Visit

Best Season for Golf in Morocco

Morocco's exceptional climate means there is genuinely no bad time to play golf here — but each season has its character.

Recommended

Peak Season

October — April

Temperature
18-26°C (64-79°F)
Rainfall
Light (mostly Nov-Feb)
Golf Conditions
Excellent

Optimal for all courses. Fairways are green and firm, temperatures are comfortable all day, and the Atlas Mountains often have snow caps providing spectacular backdrops. Book tee times 2-4 weeks in advance at popular courses.

Shoulder Season

September / May

Temperature
22-32°C (72-90°F)
Rainfall
Minimal
Golf Conditions
Very Good

Excellent value with fewer international visitors. September follows the summer heat and courses are in good condition. May brings warm afternoons but early tee times (7-9 am) are ideal. Atlantic coast courses remain very comfortable.

Summer

June — August

Temperature
30-40°C (86-104°F)
Rainfall
Negligible
Golf Conditions
Good (early morning only)

Inland courses (Marrakech) require early tee times before 9 am to avoid extreme heat. Atlantic coast courses at Agadir, El Jadida, and Mazagan benefit from ocean breezes, remaining comfortable. Green fees are often discounted 20-30% in summer.

Marrakech vs. Agadir: A Climate Comparison

Marrakech sits inland at 450 metres elevation, producing hot, dry summers (35-40°C) and mild, occasionally wet winters (12-18°C). Agadir, on the Atlantic coast, enjoys a moderated Mediterranean-Atlantic climate with summer highs of 26-28°C and winter lows rarely below 14°C. If you are planning a summer golf trip, Agadir and the Atlantic coast courses offer substantially more comfortable playing conditions. For winter golf with dramatic mountain scenery, Marrakech in December-February is hard to surpass.

Beyond the Fairways

Golf and Cultural Tour Combinations

Morocco's density of UNESCO heritage, ancient medinas, and natural wonders makes every golf trip a dual adventure.

Marrakech: Golf and the Pink City

Morning rounds at Amelkis or Al Maaden flow naturally into afternoon medina exploration. The souks are a 15-minute taxi from any Marrakech course. Highlights: Djemaa el-Fna square at sunset, Jardin Majorelle and Yves Saint Laurent Museum, traditional hammam experience, cooking class in a medina riad. The contrast between the precision of a championship layout in the morning and the sensory intensity of the souks in the afternoon is the quintessential Morocco golf experience.

Suggested Pairings

  • —Amelkis + Djemaa el-Fna
  • —Al Maaden + Jardin Majorelle
  • —Royal Golf Marrakech + Medina hammam
  • —Samanah + Cooking class at riad

Rabat: Golf at the Royal Capital

Dar Es Salam is eight kilometres from Rabat's UNESCO-listed medina and the magnificent Hassan Tower. Rabat is Morocco's capital and arguably its most underrated city — calm, walkable, and stuffed with heritage. The Kasbah of the Udayas overlooks the Atlantic mouth of the Bou Regreg river. Chellah, the ruined Roman and Merinid necropolis, is a haunting afternoon detour after 18 holes on the Red Course. Pair with a night at one of Rabat's palace hotels.

Suggested Pairings

  • —Dar Es Salam Red Course + Hassan Tower
  • —Dar Es Salam Blue Course + Kasbah des Udayas
  • —Morning round + Chellah ruins afternoon
  • —Golf weekend + Casablanca day trip

Imperial Cities Circuit with Golf

Build a multi-city itinerary that weaves golf around the four imperial capitals. Start with 2 rounds in Marrakech, drive north to Fes for a medina immersion day, continue to Meknes and Volubilis (Roman ruins), then finish in Rabat with Dar Es Salam. This 8-10 day circuit covers the cultural highlights most visitors want while building in 4-5 rounds of serious golf at top venues. Private driver and advance tee time booking are essential for this itinerary.

Suggested Pairings

  • —Marrakech courses + Fes medina (no golf — pure culture)
  • —Rabat Dar Es Salam + Volubilis Roman ruins
  • —Full day at Meknes and Meknassi monuments
  • —Flexible: 1 golf, 1 culture per day rhythm

Sahara Extension: Golf to Desert

The ultimate Morocco itinerary for adventurous golfers: a week of fairways followed by a night under the stars in the Sahara Desert. After rounds in Marrakech and possibly Agadir, head southeast through the dramatic Draa Valley to Ouarzazate (the Hollywood of Africa) and continue to Merzouga for a private desert camp. Camel trek at sunset, stargazing from the dunes, overnight in a luxury camp — then fly home from Errachidia or Ouarzazate. This combination exists nowhere else on earth.

Suggested Pairings

  • —Marrakech golf x3 + Ait Ben Haddou UNESCO site
  • —Ouarzazate film studios + Valley of Roses
  • —Merzouga Sahara overnight camp
  • —Camel trek at sunrise before return flight

Practical Information

Equipment Rental, Caddies & Course Etiquette

Club Rental

Every major course in Morocco offers club rental. Sets are typically modern Callaway, TaylorMade, or Ping equipment in good condition. Rental fees range from 200-400 MAD ($20-40) for a full set with bag. Ask at the pro shop to inspect the set before heading to the first tee — this is standard practice and expected. Right-handed and left-handed sets are available at most venues. Graphite-shafted sets for seniors are widely available.

Buggies and Trolleys

GPS electric buggies are available at most resort courses: 300-500 MAD ($30-50) per round for a shared buggy. Pull trolleys cost 50-100 MAD. Battery-powered trolleys are available at some venues (150-200 MAD). Walking is permitted and encouraged on cooler mornings — Morocco's golf culture is comfortable with walking. Caddie plus trolley is a popular and economical combination at the older royal courses.

Caddies

Caddies are available at most Moroccan courses and are strongly recommended, particularly at Dar Es Salam and the mature tree-lined courses where local knowledge is invaluable. Standard caddie fee: 150-200 MAD ($15-20) per round plus tip. Tipping 50-100 MAD for good service is customary and appreciated. Caddies at the royal courses are often experienced professionals who know every break and borrow on the course intimately.

Dress Code

Moroccan golf clubs maintain a smart-casual dress code: collared shirts are required, tailored shorts or trousers, and soft-spike or spikeless golf shoes. Jeans, sleeveless shirts, and trainers are generally not permitted on the course. The dress code is enforced more strictly at private royal clubs than at resort courses. The pro shop at most venues stocks replacement items if you arrive underprepared.

Booking Tee Times

Peak season (November-March) requires advance booking, particularly at the top Marrakech courses. Amelkis, Al Maaden, and Samanah can be fully booked 3-4 weeks ahead during high season. Book directly through the club's website or, for guaranteed availability and bundled rates, through a golf tour operator. Most courses accept online and phone bookings. Some royal clubs require a letter of introduction for first visits — your tour operator handles this.

Getting to Courses

Taxis are the most convenient option for accessing courses from city centres. A taxi from Marrakech medina to any of the main courses costs 50-100 MAD ($5-10) by petit taxi, or 100-200 MAD by grand taxi for the more distant courses. Grand taxis can be hired for the day (400-600 MAD) to visit multiple courses or combine with cultural sightseeing. Ride-hailing apps (Careem, inDriver) operate in Marrakech, Rabat, and Agadir. Rental cars are available at all airports.

Common Questions

Golf in Morocco — FAQ

When is the best time to play golf in Morocco?

Morocco offers year-round golf, but the prime season runs from October through April when temperatures sit between 18°C and 26°C — ideal playing conditions. The shoulder months of October-November and March-April are particularly pleasant with green fairways and manageable crowds. Summer (June-August) is playable but afternoon temperatures in Marrakech can exceed 38°C; morning tee times before 9 am are advisable. The Atlantic coast courses at Agadir and Essaouira enjoy cooler ocean breezes year-round, extending comfortable play into the summer months.

How much do green fees cost at Morocco golf courses?

Green fees in Morocco range from 350 MAD ($35) at municipal courses to 1,500 MAD ($150) at premier resort clubs. The Royal Golf Marrakech charges around 600 MAD ($60) for 18 holes. Amelkis and Al Maaden sit in the 900-1,100 MAD ($90-110) range. Samanah and Mazagan reach 1,200-1,500 MAD ($120-150) as international resort courses. Caddie fees add 150-200 MAD and are customary. Booking through a golf tour operator often includes green fee discounts of 10-20% and guaranteed tee times at peak season.

Can I rent golf clubs in Morocco?

Yes, all major courses offer full club rental sets, typically Callaway, TaylorMade, or Ping. Rental fees range from 200-400 MAD ($20-40) per round for a full set including bag. Pull carts cost 50-100 MAD and electric trolleys 150-200 MAD. Golf buggy hire runs 300-500 MAD per round. If you have a preferred set, major airlines generally treat golf bags as special sporting equipment; check your carrier's policy as some charge an excess fee. Balls and gloves are sold at every pro shop.

Do I need a handicap certificate to play golf in Morocco?

Most resort courses in Morocco do not require an official handicap certificate for casual play. The Royal Golf Clubs may request evidence of golf ability for certain tee times, particularly at peak season on championship layouts. Bringing your home club membership card or a printed handicap index is advisable for Dar Es Salam Rabat and the Amelkis championship courses. For holiday golf packages, your operator handles all bookings and access.

What are the best golf courses near Marrakech?

Marrakech has the highest concentration of quality golf in Morocco. The top courses within 30 minutes of the medina are: Amelkis Golf Club (27 holes, par 72, Atlas Mountain views), Al Maaden Golf Club (18 holes, Kyle Phillips design, luxury resort), Palmeraie Golf Club (18 holes, Robert Trent Jones Sr., classic parkland), and Samanah Golf and Country Club (18 holes, Jack Nicklaus design, premium resort experience). Royal Golf Marrakech is the historic course founded in 1933, the oldest in Morocco, and retains considerable charm with mature trees and a relaxed atmosphere.

Can I combine a golf trip with other Morocco experiences?

Absolutely — Morocco is one of the few destinations where you can play 18 holes in the morning and explore a 1,000-year-old medina in the afternoon. Golf and cultural combinations work exceptionally well: Marrakech courses pair with souks, Djemaa el-Fna, and hammam experiences. Agadir courses combine with Atlantic beaches and surf culture. Rabat's Dar Es Salam is adjacent to the royal capital's UNESCO heritage sites. We design bespoke itineraries that allocate mornings to golf and afternoons to cultural immersion, desert excursions, or culinary experiences.

Is golf in Morocco suitable for high-handicap players?

Yes. Morocco has courses calibrated for all ability levels. Royal Golf Marrakech and Palmeraie offer relatively forgiving layouts with wide fairways that suit mid-to-high handicappers. Golf du Soleil in Agadir has a 9-hole academy course ideal for beginners. Cabo Negro in Tangier has an accessible compact course. Even the more challenging championship designs have forward tees that make the courses manageable. Caddies are an asset for all levels — they read greens, advise on club selection, and navigate local knowledge that no GPS system can replicate.

What should I pack for a Morocco golf holiday?

Dress code at Moroccan golf clubs is smart-casual: collared shirts, tailored shorts or trousers, and golf shoes. Bring: high-SPF sunscreen (the sun is intense even in winter), a sun hat with full brim, sunglasses with UV protection, a light windproof layer for early morning rounds, and electrolyte tablets for summer play. Water is provided on course at most venues but carrying a personal bottle is wise. Spike shoes are preferred over spikeless at some older courses — check with your specific club. A GPS watch or rangefinder is helpful as not all courses have GPS carts.
