Morocco Car Rental Guide 2026

Renting a car opens up Morocco's most spectacular landscapes — from the Tizi n'Tichka pass to the Atlantic coast highway. This guide covers everything you need to know: costs, insurance, road rules, fuel, tolls, the best driving routes, and whether self-driving or a chauffeur is the right choice for your trip.

Rent a Car vs. Hire a Chauffeur

Before diving into rental details, consider whether self-driving is the right choice. Both options have clear advantages depending on your travel style and itinerary.

FactorSelf-Drive RentalChauffeur Service
Cost (per day)$25-80 + fuel + tolls$100-200 all-inclusive
FlexibilityMaximum — stop anywhere, anytimeHigh — discuss route with driver
Navigation stressYou navigate (GPS recommended)Driver handles everything
City drivingChallenging in Marrakech/CasablancaNo stress — driver knows the roads
Cultural insightNone — you are on your ownDriver doubles as informal guide
ParkingYou find and pay for parkingDriver handles it while you explore
Best forBudget travelers, experienced driversFamilies, luxury travelers, first-timers

Our recommendation: For first-time visitors, a private chauffeur service offers the best balance of comfort, safety, and cultural immersion. For repeat visitors who are comfortable with North African driving culture, a rental car provides maximum flexibility at lower cost.

Best Driving Routes in Morocco

These scenic routes showcase the best of Morocco's landscapes. All are paved and suitable for standard rental cars unless noted.

Marrakech to Ouarzazate via Tizi n'Tichka

200 km / 4-5 hours

Morocco's most famous mountain pass, climbing to 2,260m through the High Atlas with hairpin turns, dramatic gorges, and panoramic views. Stop at Ait Benhaddou, the UNESCO kasbah used in countless films, and the working Tichka mines.

Road quality: Good paved road, but narrow and winding. Not recommended in winter snow conditions.Vehicle: Any car, but SUV preferred for comfort.

Todra and Dades Gorges

300 km loop / 2 days

Starting from Ouarzazate, drive east through the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs to Tinerhir and the towering Todra Gorge (300m walls). Continue to the Dades Gorge with its famous serpentine switchbacks. One of the most photogenic drives in North Africa.

Road quality: Mostly good. Dades road has tight hairpins.Vehicle: Standard car for main route, SUV for gorge depths.

Atlantic Coast: Essaouira to Agadir

175 km / 2.5 hours

A relaxed coastal drive with ocean views, argan forests, and the opportunity to stop at hidden beaches and fishing villages. Pass through Taghazout, Morocco's premier surf town, and visit argan oil cooperatives along the way.

Road quality: Excellent paved road.Vehicle: Any car.

Chefchaouen to Fes via Rif Mountains

210 km / 4 hours

Wind through the green Rif Mountains from the blue city of Chefchaouen to the imperial city of Fes. The route passes through lush valleys, cannabis-growing regions (observation only), and remote Berber villages with traditional architecture.

Road quality: Narrow, winding mountain roads. Take it slow.Vehicle: Any car, but SUV more comfortable.

Errachidia to Merzouga (Sahara Gateway)

130 km / 2 hours

The approach to the Sahara across the Tafilalet oasis. The landscape shifts from irrigated palm groves to flat hamada desert. Arrive in Merzouga with the golden Erg Chebbi dunes rising like mountains ahead of you. Park here and continue by camel or 4x4 into the desert.

Road quality: Good paved road all the way to Merzouga.Vehicle: Any car (do not drive into the dunes).

Rental Insurance Explained

Third-Party Liability (Included)

Required by law and always included in the rental price. Covers damage you cause to other vehicles and property. Does not cover your rental vehicle or personal injuries.

CDW — Collision Damage Waiver ($10-20/day)

Reduces your liability if the rental car is damaged. Without CDW, you are responsible for the full repair cost. With CDW, your liability is capped at the excess amount (typically $500-1,500 depending on vehicle). Strongly recommended.

Theft Protection ($5-15/day)

Covers you if the vehicle is stolen. Like CDW, there is usually an excess. Can be combined with CDW for a package deal. Recommended for longer trips and overnight parking in cities.

Super CDW / Zero Excess ($10-15/day additional)

Eliminates the excess entirely so you pay nothing in case of damage or theft. The most expensive option but provides total peace of mind. Consider this if you are driving mountain roads or parking in busy cities.

Credit Card Coverage

Many premium credit cards (Visa Gold, Amex Platinum) include rental car insurance. Check your card benefits before departure. If covered, decline the rental company's CDW but understand that credit card coverage is secondary — you pay first and claim later.

Rental Companies in Morocco

International Companies

Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Sixt

Higher prices but reliable vehicles, clear insurance, and international customer service. Best for peace of mind. Available at all major airports.

Enterprise, Budget, Thrifty

Slightly lower prices than premium brands. Limited Morocco locations but good airport coverage.

Local Companies

Medocar, AfricaCar, Autohall

Significantly cheaper (30-50% less) but inspect vehicles carefully. Insurance clarity may vary. Read reviews and document all existing damage before departure.

Booking Aggregators

Rentalcars.com, Kayak, and DiscoverCars compare both international and local companies. Often find the best deals. Read insurance terms carefully.

What to Check Before Driving Away

  • Photograph all existing damage (scratches, dents, chips)
  • Verify the fuel level matches the contract
  • Check tire condition including the spare
  • Ensure windshield wipers and lights work
  • Get the emergency roadside number
  • Confirm insurance coverage and excess amount
  • Ask about mileage limits and extra driver fees
  • Save the return location and office hours

Skip the Stress — Travel with a Private Driver

Our experienced chauffeurs handle the driving so you can focus on the views, the conversations, and the experience. All vehicles are modern, air-conditioned, and fully insured.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to rent a car in Morocco?

Economy cars start at $15-30 per day, mid-size sedans $35-60, SUVs $50-100, and luxury vehicles $100-250+. Add insurance ($10-25/day), fuel (~$1.20/liter), and toll roads ($5-15 per trip). Book 2+ weeks in advance and avoid peak season for the best rates.

Do I need an international driving permit?

An IDP is recommended but not strictly required for stays under 90 days with a license from the USA, UK, EU, Canada, or Australia. Having one avoids potential issues at police checkpoints. Get one from your local automobile association for about $20.

Is it safe to drive in Morocco?

Highways are excellent. City driving in Marrakech and Casablanca can be challenging with heavy traffic. Mountain roads require careful driving. Night driving outside cities is not recommended due to unlit vehicles and livestock. Experienced drivers will manage fine; nervous drivers should consider a chauffeur service.

What side of the road does Morocco drive on?

Morocco drives on the right side of the road with left-hand drive vehicles, the same as continental Europe and the Americas.

Should I get rental car insurance?

Yes, CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) and theft protection are strongly recommended. Without CDW, you are liable for the full vehicle value if damaged. Check if your credit card provides coverage before purchasing. Full coverage costs $10-25 per day.

What are the speed limits in Morocco?

60 km/h in cities, 80-100 km/h on rural roads, 120 km/h on highways. Speed cameras are very common, especially on highway approaches. Fines start at 300 MAD ($30) and can be issued on the spot.

Can I take a rental car into the Sahara?

Paved roads reach Merzouga and M'Hamid, the Sahara gateway towns. Standard rental cars should not go off-road — most contracts prohibit it. From the gateway towns, continue by camel or guided 4x4 tour. Specialized off-road rentals are available but cost $80-150/day.

Is a chauffeur better than renting a car?

For first-time visitors, families, and luxury travelers, a chauffeur service is often the better choice. You avoid navigation stress, complex city traffic, and parking challenges while gaining a knowledgeable local driver. Self-drive is ideal for budget-conscious repeat visitors who enjoy driving.
