Which airport to fly into for your destination — a practical guide to Morocco's major airports, the airlines that serve them, and how to reach your riad.
Morocco has several international airports scattered across the country, but choosing the right one can save you hours of overland travel and significantly improve your first day. The two dominant gateways are Marrakech Menara (RAK) for southern Morocco and Mohammed V in Casablanca (CMN) for onward rail connections anywhere in the country.
Beyond these two, regional airports at Fes (FEZ), Agadir (AGA), and Tangier (TNG) offer direct European flights that can put you much closer to your actual destination. Smaller airports at Essaouira, Ouarzazate, and Dakhla serve niche routes but have limited schedules.
The decision often comes down to a simple question: where do you want to spend your first night? Fly into the airport closest to that answer, and you will start your trip refreshed rather than exhausted from a long transfer.
Marrakech (RAK) and Casablanca (CMN) handle the majority of international arrivals with the widest airline and route selection.
Fes, Agadir, and Tangier offer direct European connections that can eliminate hours of overland travel to your destination.
Only Casablanca (CMN) has a direct airport-to-city train link. All other airports require taxi or bus transfers.
Essaouira, Ouarzazate, and Dakhla have airports with very limited service. Most travelers use road connections instead.
Detailed profiles of every airport you might fly into, with the information that actually matters: what destinations each one serves, which airlines operate there, and how to get from the terminal to your hotel.
5km southwest of city center
Morocco's second-busiest airport and the primary gateway for travelers heading to southern Morocco. Marrakech Menara handles a high volume of European low-cost carriers alongside full-service airlines, making it the most affordable entry point for many visitors. The airport has two terminals and is well equipped with ATMs, car rental desks, and a Maroc Telecom booth for SIM cards.
No direct rail link to the airport. The train station is in the city center (Marrakech Gare). Taxi or bus required to reach it.
35km southeast of Casablanca city center
Morocco's busiest and best-connected airport, serving as the hub for Royal Air Maroc. If you cannot find a direct flight to your Moroccan destination, you will almost certainly find a connection through CMN. The airport has two terminals, extensive duty-free shopping, lounges, and the significant advantage of a direct ONCF train link to the city center and onward to other Moroccan cities.
The airport train station is directly connected to Terminal 1. Trains run frequently to Casablanca city and connect to Rabat, Marrakech, Fes, Tangier, and Meknes.
25km east of Agadir city center
The main gateway to Morocco's southern Atlantic coast and the Souss-Massa region. Agadir airport receives a high proportion of charter and package-holiday flights from Europe, particularly from the UK, France, and Germany. The airport is modern and efficient, though smaller than Marrakech or Casablanca.
No rail service to Agadir. All onward travel is by road.
12km south of Fes city center
A compact but well-served airport that provides direct access to Morocco's spiritual and cultural capital. Fes-Sais has seen significant growth in low-cost carrier routes from Europe, making it an excellent choice for travelers focused on northern Morocco. The airport is small enough that navigation is straightforward, but it can feel crowded when multiple flights arrive simultaneously.
Fes train station (Gare de Fes) is in the Ville Nouvelle. No direct airport rail link.
12km southwest of Tangier city center
The northern gateway to Morocco, increasingly well connected with European budget carriers. Tangier airport benefits from the city's proximity to the Tangier Med port and the Al Boraq TGV high-speed rail line, which connects Tangier to Casablanca in roughly two hours. This makes Tangier a viable arrival point for travelers heading south by train.
Tangier Ville train station connects to the Al Boraq TGV network. Casablanca is reachable in approximately 2 hours 10 minutes by high-speed train.
15km south of Essaouira medina
A very small airport with extremely limited service. Ryanair operates seasonal flights from a handful of European cities, but schedules are sparse and seasonal. For most travelers, flying into Marrakech and driving or taking a bus to Essaouira (roughly 3 hours) remains the practical choice.
Most visitors reach Essaouira by driving or taking a Supratours bus from Marrakech (approximately 3 hours). Do not rely on this airport for regular access.
1km north of Ouarzazate town center
A small airport that primarily serves domestic connections via Royal Air Maroc through Casablanca. Ouarzazate is the gateway to the Draa Valley, Ait Benhaddou, and the eastern approach to the Sahara. The airport occasionally sees charter traffic related to film productions at the nearby Atlas Studios.
Limited flight availability. Most travelers reach Ouarzazate by road from Marrakech (approximately 4 hours via the Tizi n'Tichka pass).
5km from Dakhla town center
A remote airport serving the growing kitesurfing and windsurfing destination of Dakhla on Morocco's far southern Atlantic coast. Dakhla is a long way from anywhere else in Morocco by road, so flying is the practical choice for most visitors.
Dakhla is roughly 1,700km south of Casablanca by road. Flying is strongly recommended unless you are on an overland adventure.
A straightforward reference table. Find your destination, check the recommended airport, and see the alternative if direct flights are unavailable.

Your first thirty minutes in any country set the tone for the trip. These tips will help you navigate the airport smoothly and avoid common pitfalls.
Look for the Maroc Telecom, Inwi, or Orange booth in the arrivals hall. A prepaid SIM with data costs roughly 30-50 MAD and gives you maps, translation, and communication from the moment you leave the airport. Maroc Telecom has the widest rural coverage.
ATMs are available at all major airports and dispense Moroccan dirhams at competitive interbank rates. Airport currency exchange kiosks typically offer poor rates with high commissions. Withdraw enough cash for your first taxi and a day of spending.
Agree on the fare before entering the taxi, or insist on the meter if one exists. Better yet, arrange a private transfer through your accommodation or tour operator. This eliminates negotiation stress after a long flight.
Moroccan airport arrivals can feel chaotic, especially at Marrakech. Unofficial "helpers" may approach you offering taxis or hotel bookings. Politely decline, follow signs to the official taxi rank, and do not hand your luggage to strangers.
At larger airports, porters may offer to carry your bags. If you accept, a tip of 10-20 MAD is customary. Trolleys are available in the baggage claim area, sometimes for a small coin deposit.
Immigration queues can be lengthy, particularly when several flights arrive at once. Fill out the entry card on the plane to save time. Have your passport, return flight details, and accommodation address ready.
Once you have landed, Morocco offers several ways to reach your final destination. The right choice depends on where you are going, your budget, and how many people are in your group.
Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca is the only Moroccan airport with a direct ONCF rail link. Trains run frequently to Casablanca city, with onward connections to Rabat, Marrakech, Fes, Meknes, and Tangier. This makes CMN the most versatile arrival airport for rail travelers.

Full transport guideMarrakech Menara Airport (RAK) is the best choice, located just 5km from the city center with a 15-20 minute taxi ride to the medina. It is served by numerous European low-cost carriers as well as full-service airlines.
Both Marrakech (RAK) and Fes (FEZ) serve as starting points for Sahara trips. RAK is the typical start for the southern circuit via Ouarzazate and the Dades Valley to Merzouga. FEZ offers a more direct eastern approach through Midelt and Errachidia.
Yes. Mohammed V Airport (CMN) has a direct ONCF train link to Casablanca city center (35-40 minutes) with onward connections to Rabat, Marrakech, Fes, Tangier, and other cities on the national rail network.
The closest airports to Chefchaouen are Tangier (TNG) at 2.5 hours by road and Fes (FEZ) at roughly 4 hours by road. Tangier is the closer and more common choice. There is no airport in Chefchaouen itself.
Essaouira Mogador Airport (ESU) has very limited and seasonal service, primarily from Ryanair. Most visitors fly into Marrakech (RAK) and drive or take a Supratours bus to Essaouira, which takes approximately 3 hours.
