The Famous Orange Dunes of Morocco
Towering dunes reaching 150 metres, luxury camps under blazing starlit skies, ancient Gnaoua music, and the silence of the world's most photogenic desert landscape.
Erg Chebbi is the image that comes to mind when people think of the Sahara: towering, sculptural dunes of deep orange sand rising from the flat, rocky desert (hammada) in dramatic waves that shift and reshape with every wind. Located near the small village of Merzouga in southeastern Morocco, this 22-kilometre-long, 5-kilometre-wide sand sea reaches heights of up to 150 metres — the tallest dunes in the country.
The dunes owe their famous orange colour to a high iron oxide content that intensifies with sunlight, turning the sand from pale gold at dawn to deep amber at sunset. This constant play of light and shadow makes Erg Chebbi one of the most photographed landscapes in Africa.
Merzouga itself is a modest desert village that has grown into Morocco's premier desert tourism hub. More than fifty camps operate in the surrounding dunes, from basic bivouacs to ultra-luxury glamping experiences. The village also serves as a gateway to Khamlia (a Sub-Saharan community famous for Gnaoua music), the fossil-rich region around Erfoud, and the remote desert landscapes stretching toward the Algerian border.
Erg Chebbi is one of only two major sand seas (ergs) in Morocco. Unlike the flat, rocky desert (hammada) that covers most of the Sahara, ergs are dramatic accumulations of wind-blown sand that form towering dunes. The distinctive orange colour comes from iron oxide in the sand, which intensifies in sunlight. At sunrise and sunset, the dunes cycle through gold, amber, copper, and rose — a spectacle that has drawn travellers, photographers, and filmmakers for decades.

The quintessential Merzouga experience. Ride a dromedary camel into the dunes as the sun sets, painting the sand in shades of amber, gold, and rose. Treks last 1-2 hours to reach camp.
Wake before dawn and climb the nearest high dune. Watch as the first light transforms the desert through every shade of pink, orange, and gold. The silence is absolute.
Visit the Sub-Saharan community of Khamlia, 7 km from Merzouga. The village preserves the Gnaoua musical tradition with live performances featuring the guembri (bass instrument) and krakebs (metal castanets).
The region around Erfoud is rich in 350-million-year-old marine fossils. Visit workshops where artisans polish ammonites, trilobites, and orthoceras embedded in local marble. Authentic pieces make unique souvenirs.
Surf the dunes on a board. No experience needed. Guides will take you to the best slopes with soft sand landings. Popular with families and adventure seekers.
Explore the desert on four wheels. Guided tours take you through dunes, rocky desert (reg), and dry riverbeds. Available from Merzouga town.
Venture deep into the Erg Chebbi in a 4x4 vehicle. Visit remote nomadic families, discover hidden oases, and explore areas inaccessible by camel.
Erg Chebbi has virtually zero light pollution. The Milky Way is clearly visible to the naked eye. Some luxury camps provide telescopes and guided astronomy sessions.
Khamlia is a small village just 7 kilometres from Merzouga, home to a community of Sub-Saharan African descent who have preserved the ancient Gnaoua musical tradition for centuries. Gnaoua music blends African spiritual rhythms with Berber and Arabic influences, creating a hypnotic, trance-inducing sound.
Visitors are welcomed into a simple room where musicians perform with the guembri (a three-stringed bass lute), krakebs (large metal castanets), and vocals. The music starts slowly and builds to an intense, driving rhythm. A donation of 20-50 MAD per person is expected and appreciated.

The Erfoud region, 50 kilometres northwest of Merzouga, sits on an ancient seabed dating back 350-450 million years. The area is one of the world's richest fossil sites, yielding beautifully preserved ammonites, trilobites, and orthoceras (ancient squid-like creatures) embedded in local black marble.
Local artisans operate workshops where they excavate, cut, and polish these fossils into everything from small souvenirs to spectacular tables and sinks. Visiting a fossil workshop is a fascinating experience, and authentic pieces range from a few dollars to thousands for museum-quality specimens.
Buyer beware: Some workshops sell manufactured or composite fossils alongside authentic ones. Genuine fossils have natural irregularities and visible matrix rock. Ask your guide to recommend a reputable dealer.
The most direct route. Drive south through Midelt and Errachidia via the N13. Crosses the Middle Atlas at the Tizi n'Talrhemt pass (1,907 m). Many tours split this with a night in Midelt or Errachidia.
Via Ouarzazate and Tinghir. Most tours take 2 days, stopping at Ait Benhaddou, Dades Gorge, or Todra Gorge. The northern route through the gorges is the most scenic.
Errachidia Moulay Ali Cherif Airport (ERH) has flights from Casablanca. From the airport, Merzouga is 2 hours by car. The fastest option.
Via the Dades Valley and Tinghir. A scenic drive through dramatic gorge landscapes. Good starting point if visiting Ait Benhaddou.
Book your camel trek for the afternoon to catch sunset. Morning treks miss the golden light.
Ask your camp to arrange a Gnaoua music evening if it is not already included.
Bring a headscarf or shemagh. Sand gets everywhere, especially on windy days.
Negotiate 4x4 and quad bike prices before starting. Agree on duration and route.
Visit the Hassilabied oasis village for a local market experience away from tourist camps.
If visiting in winter, pack seriously warm clothes. Desert nights can drop below freezing.
Carry a torch/headlamp. Camps have limited lighting and dune walks at night need illumination.
Leave your large luggage in Merzouga town. Bring only an overnight bag to camp.
The tallest dunes at Erg Chebbi reach up to 150 metres (490 feet), making them the highest sand dunes in Morocco. The average dune height across the erg is around 50-80 metres.
Kam Kam Dunes is widely considered the top luxury option, with en-suite tents, gourmet dining, and private stargazing. Merzouga Luxury Desert Camp is another excellent choice. Both should be booked well in advance for peak season (October-March).
Absolutely. The journey is part of the experience: the route passes through the Atlas Mountains, gorges, kasbahs, and oases. Most tours split the drive into 2 days, making the journey enjoyable rather than exhausting.
Gnaoua is a spiritual musical tradition rooted in Sub-Saharan African heritage, blending African rhythms with Berber and Arabic influences. The community in Khamlia village (7 km from Merzouga) preserves this tradition and welcomes visitors to live performances.
Summer (May-September) brings extreme heat, often exceeding 45 C. Sand temperatures can reach 70 C. While technically possible with very early morning and late evening activities, it is not recommended for most visitors. October-April is far more comfortable.
"Merzouga exceeded every expectation. The dunes are impossibly tall and impossibly beautiful. Our camp at Kam Kam was pure luxury — I could not believe I was sleeping in the middle of the Sahara with a proper bathroom and a bed this comfortable. The Gnaoua performance at Khamlia was one of the most powerful musical experiences of my life."
