Serenity Morocco

World-class trade winds, consistent Atlantic swells, and three distinct surf zones. The complete water-sports guide to Morocco's wind capital.
Essaouira's position on Morocco's Atlantic coast creates one of the most reliable wind zones in Africa. The alizee trade winds blow more than 300 days a year, peaking between April and September with consistent 20-30 knot conditions that have earned the city the title "Wind City of Africa."
The coastline around Essaouira offers three distinct water-sport zones: the main beach for windsurfing and kitesurfing, Sidi Kaouki to the south for board surfing, and Moulay Bouzerktoun to the north for kitesurfing. Together they cover every discipline and level, from first-time beginners to professional competitors.
Unlike the purpose-built surf towns of Europe and the Americas, Essaouira combines world-class water sports with a UNESCO-listed medina, Gnawa music heritage, and the freshest seafood in Morocco. You can spend the morning riding waves at Sidi Kaouki, eat grilled fish at the port for lunch, explore artisan workshops in the afternoon, and watch the sunset from the ramparts -- a combination no other surf destination can match.
The vast crescent beach south of the medina walls is Essaouira's premier wind-sport venue. The alizee trade winds blow side-onshore, creating flat water inside the bay (ideal for beginners) and choppier conditions outside (great for wave sailing and freestyle). Multiple schools and rental centres line the beachfront.
This bohemian surf village 30 minutes south of Essaouira offers the best board-surfing conditions in the area. The wind shadow from the cliffs creates cleaner wave faces than the main beach, making it ideal for both learning and progression. The beach break is forgiving with sandy bottom and multiple peaks.
Morocco's kitesurfing capital, 25 minutes north of Essaouira. The vast, wide-open beach provides unlimited space for launching, riding, and landing. Consistent thermal wind combines with the trade winds for reliable conditions. Several kite schools offer IKO-certified instruction.
A less-known surf spot south of the main beach, accessible by walking along the shore past the medina. Offers more powerful waves than the main beach with fewer people. The reef and sand bottom creates different peaks depending on tide and swell direction.
The most established centre on the main beach. Full range of equipment, multilingual instructors, and structured lesson programmes from beginner to advanced. Storage and shower facilities.
International brand with quality equipment and professional instruction. Known for premium gear (latest North/Duotone equipment) and small group sizes. Excellent for intermediate and advanced riders.
A complete beachfront base with restaurant, bar, equipment rental, storage, showers, and changing rooms. More of a lifestyle spot than pure school, but instruction available. The social hub of the beach.
Dedicated board-surfing school at Sidi Kaouki with ISA-certified instructors. Small groups, quality boards, and focus on progression. Also offers multi-day surf camps with accommodation.
Specialist kite school at the premier kite beach. IKO-certified instruction with latest equipment. The wide-open beach provides ideal learning conditions. Multi-day packages available.

The alizee trade winds blow most consistently in summer, peaking July-August with 20-30 knots. May-June and September offer the best balance of reliable wind and comfortable temperatures. Advanced wave sailing is best when swells combine with wind in October.
Same wind season as windsurfing. Moulay Bouzerktoun is the spot for kiting, with thermal winds boosting conditions. The annual kite festival (typically May) draws international competitors. Spring is ideal for learning before peak crowds arrive.
The opposite season. When the wind drops in autumn and winter, the Atlantic delivers powerful ground swells. Sidi Kaouki and Diabat work best with calmer wind and bigger waves. November and December are the prime surf months.
The sweet spot. Moderate wind still allows windsurfing, while the first autumn swells create fun waves for surfing. Warm water (20-21 C), pleasant air temperatures, and fewer tourists than summer. The best time if you want to try everything.
Wetsuits are essential year-round. Atlantic water ranges 17-21 C. A 3/2mm is fine for summer; use a 4/3mm in winter.
For board surfing, skip the main beach and head straight to Sidi Kaouki (30 min south). The wind shadow creates much cleaner waves.
Wind is typically lightest in the morning and builds through the afternoon. Surfing sessions are best early; wind sessions peak after noon.
The strongest winds (and best windsurf conditions) are July-August, but April-June offers more comfortable air temperatures.
Moulay Bouzerktoun is the kite spot. Do not try to kite on Essaouira main beach when it is crowded -- accidents happen.
Book multi-day packages for significant savings. A 5-day kite course is much better value than 5 individual sessions.
September-October is the sweet spot: warm water, moderate wind, arriving swells. The best month for all-round water sports.
Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a rash vest are essential. The combination of water reflection and wind can cause severe sunburn.
If you are an experienced kiter or windsurfer, bring your own harness. Rental harnesses are often worn and uncomfortable.
Ocean Vagabond is the social hub. Even if you do not rent from them, their beach bar is the place to debrief after a session.
Our local experts arrange surf lessons, kite courses, and wind-sport packages with the best schools in Essaouira.
"Essaouira completely exceeded my expectations. The wind is incredibly consistent, the school was professional, and after sessions I could walk into a UNESCO medina for grilled fish and Gnawa music. Nowhere else offers this combination."
