About Asilah

Asilah enchants visitors with its pristine whitewashed medina, spectacular Atlantic setting, and vibrant artistic heritage. This small coastal town, just 45 kilometers south of Tangier, has transformed from a sleepy fishing port into Morocco's premier cultural destination while maintaining its authentic charm.

The town's history spans millennia, from Phoenician traders to Roman occupation, Portuguese fortification, and Spanish rule. The Portuguese ramparts, constructed in the 15th century, remain remarkably intact, their weathered stone walls enclosing a medina that gleams white against the deep blue Atlantic. These fortifications, including the Torre Coracha and Borj Al Kamra towers, create dramatic viewpoints over the crashing waves below.

Since 1978, the annual Asilah Cultural Festival has drawn international artists to paint murals throughout the medina, transforming ordinary walls into an ever-changing open-air gallery. Local and international painters, musicians, and writers gather each August, making Asilah a unique cultural crossroads.

Beyond the medina walls, the Hassan II Center for International Conferences hosts exhibitions and events in a stunning modern complex. The nearby Paradise Beach offers expansive golden sands, while the ancient Cromlech of M'soura, a mysterious megalithic stone circle, lies a short drive inland.

Asilah's compact size makes it perfect for leisurely exploration. Wander through streets lined with blue-painted doors and window frames, pause at galleries displaying local art, dine on fresh seafood at Atlantic-view terraces, and watch fishermen unload their daily catch at the small harbor.
