Serenity Morocco

Paddle through the stunning Ourika Valley on a guided kayaking adventure, navigating gentle rapids and calm stretches beneath towering Atlas peaks and lush terraced hillsides.
The Ourika River descends from the snow-fed peaks of the High Atlas through one of the most beautiful valleys in Morocco, and this three-hour kayaking adventure lets you experience its splendour from the most intimate perspective possible -- the water itself. Your journey begins at a riverside launch point in the upper valley, where your certified kayak instructor provides a thorough introduction to paddling technique, river reading, and safety protocols. The single-person sit-on-top kayaks are stable and forgiving, suitable for complete beginners yet responsive enough to be enjoyable for experienced paddlers. The route follows the Ourika downstream through a constantly changing sequence of landscapes: tranquil pools where the water is so clear you can count the pebbles on the riverbed; gentle Class I-II rapids that provide just enough white water to quicken the pulse; narrow passages between river-polished boulders where precise paddling is rewarded; and wide, lazy stretches where you can rest your paddle and drift beneath canopies of walnut, olive, and almond trees. The valley walls rise steeply on either side, covered in terraced gardens, orchards, and the distinctive flat-roofed houses of Berber farming communities. Your guide stops at several points of interest: a riverside waterfall where the spray creates miniature rainbows, a natural rock pool perfect for swimming, and a shaded riverside clearing where a picnic of fresh bread, olives, cheese, and seasonal fruit is served. Birdlife along the river is abundant -- kingfishers, wagtails, and dippers are regular sightings, and golden eagles sometimes soar far overhead. The final stretch of the river is a gentle, meditative glide through a grove of ancient olive trees, the perfect cooldown after an invigorating morning on the water.
