Learn the ancient art of henna body decoration from a master neqqasha in the heart of the Marrakech medina. Design, mix natural henna paste, and practice traditional Moroccan motifs.
Henna decoration is one of the oldest and most beautiful forms of body art in the world, with a tradition in Morocco that stretches back over a thousand years. Far more than mere cosmetic adornment, henna (known locally as "lhenna") carries deep cultural and spiritual significance in Moroccan society -- it is applied at weddings to protect the bride from the evil eye, at births to welcome new life, and during religious celebrations as an expression of joy and blessing. This one-and-a-half-hour workshop introduces you to this living art form under the guidance of a master neqqasha (henna artist) whose intricate designs are sought after for the most prestigious weddings in Marrakech. The workshop takes place in a charming riad courtyard, and begins with the history and cultural significance of henna in Moroccan life: how the henna plant is cultivated in the south, ground into powder, and mixed with lemon juice, sugar, and essential oils to create the distinctive dark-red paste. Your instructor demonstrates the traditional mixing process and teaches you to distinguish genuine natural henna from chemical-laden tourist products that can cause burns. You then learn to use the application cone, starting with basic geometric patterns and progressing to the flowing floral and paisley designs characteristic of the Marrakech style. Your instructor guides your hand as you practice on paper before applying designs to each other. Finally, the neqqasha creates a beautiful original henna design on each participant -- a wearable souvenir that deepens to rich mahogany over three days and lasts up to two weeks. The session concludes with mint tea, Moroccan pastries, and a take-home henna kit with instructions for future application.
