Serenity Morocco

Trek through the dramatic valleys and Berber villages of the High Atlas with a certified mountain guide. Ascend to a summit ridge with panoramic views stretching to the Sahara.
The High Atlas Mountains are one of the great trekking destinations of the world, and this challenging six-hour day hike takes you deep into their wild heart on trails that few tourists ever discover. Your certified Berber mountain guide -- born and raised in the valleys you will traverse -- meets you at the trailhead in the Imlil Valley, the traditional starting point for expeditions to Jebel Toubkal. The trek begins with a steady ascent along a mule path carved into the mountainside, passing through terraced walnut and cherry orchards where the air is cool and fragrant. As you gain altitude, the vegetation thins and the views expand dramatically: deep gorges fall away below, distant villages appear as tiny clusters of flat-roofed houses clinging to impossible slopes, and the snow-capped peak of Toubkal dominates the southern horizon. Your guide shares an intimate knowledge of the mountains -- identifying medicinal plants, explaining the irrigation systems that sustain life at altitude, and pointing out the tracks of Barbary macaques, Atlas ground squirrels, and golden eagles that soar on the thermals above. At the summit ridge, you are rewarded with a panoramic vista that stretches from the plains of Marrakech in the north to the beginning of the Sahara in the south -- a view so vast it seems to encompass all of Morocco. A traditional Berber picnic lunch of bread, olives, cheese, seasonal fruit, and mint tea is served at the viewpoint before the descent, which follows a different trail through a hidden valley where a waterfall cascades into a natural swimming pool. The hike concludes with tea in a Berber family home, where you experience the legendary mountain hospitality that has welcomed travellers for centuries.
